Summary

`Emma meets Rosa’ follows the adventures of a girl who has been set an impossible task: to research a famous historical woman and without using the internet.  Whilst this sets the scene, the story develops with the introduction of a magic book which creates a whole new host of difficulties for the main character, not least of these being that she has turned into a mouse!  Whilst trying to return to her own time and body, Emma is witness to the world changing events of Montgomery Alabama.

`Emma Meets Rosa' is a historical adventure story exploring the events of 1955 Alabama, with Rosa Parks famously refusing to give up her seat.  Whilst other texts on this subject have either been overly simplified or vague, this allows readers to explore the events in comparison to expectations and rights held today, whilst providing a riveting and entertaining story which will keep them gripped until the end.

Target audience: Ages 6 to 11

Inspiration

The idea for the book arose following conversations with Teachers during the lead up to Black History Month.  Collectively, and across the county, we were at a loss for quality, fun books based on key Black historical characters.

Illustrations

I have been fortunate to work with Heather, whose wonderful illustrations reinforce the reality of the story.  Following my research, Heather used photographs to create the friendly, colourful and accurate pictures which both enhance the text whilst also supporting the child's imagination.
